Check the margin on an HVAC job
Enter job revenue along with material cost, direct labor, subcontractor expense, other direct job costs, and the overhead assigned to the job. The calculator separates gross profit before allocated overhead from contribution after the entered overhead.
Margin versus markup
Margin divides profit by revenue. Markup divides profit by cost. The percentages are not interchangeable. For example, adding a 25% markup to $100 of cost produces a $125 selling price and $25 of profit, but that profit is only a 20% margin on the selling price.
What to include
Use costs that match the reporting question. If direct labor includes only wages but excludes employer burden, the result may overstate profitability. If allocated overhead is omitted, gross profit can still look healthy even when the company does not recover its operating expenses.
Practical example
Reviewing margin after a job can help identify estimating gaps, material overruns, or labor hours that were not anticipated. Comparing jobs is most useful when the same cost definitions are used consistently.
Limitations
The calculator reports only the figures entered. It does not replace bookkeeping, accrual adjustments, tax advice, or a complete income statement.
